A European Voluntary Humanitarian Aid Corps volunteer from Spain

Namaste! I’m Isabel, a Spanish national, currently working in Nepal since October. Serving as a European Humanitarian Aid Corps Volunteer at WHR, I want to share my personal journey, steering away from the comprehensive explanation that my colleague Maria provided in her blog.

Now, almost three months into this transformative experience, my enthusiasm endures. Despite the chilling weather, my commitment to WHR’s cause remains steadfast. Professionally, I have delved deeper into projects focused on enhancing the lives of women in Nepal, particularly those affected by post-conflict issues. The magnitude of the armed conflict’s impact on the Nepali people was something I only grasped fully upon arriving, making my work here both eye-opening and enriching.

WHR’s dedicated efforts in supporting women, especially widows, resonate deeply in me, and contributing to their initiatives in a post-conflict setting provides me with a unique perspective on human rights work. Whether facilitating capacity-building workshops, offering psychological support, building a memorial site on the premises of the organization, sending relief material, or engaging in advocacy campaigns, among other initiatives, WHR tirelessly strives for the empowerment of the most vulnerable. Participating in significant events like the First National Memory Conference and a Workshop on Youth, Peace, and Security has allowed me to witness the impact of contributions of civil society organizations, with WHR among the ones at the forefront.

On a personal note, my time here has enriched my meaningful friendships with both Nepali locals and fellow expats. Embracing local celebrations, attending cultural events, and exploring Nepal’s natural beauty have added layers to my affection for this country. From Gunyocholo to rice-feeding parties and weddings, each experience has deepened my connection to Nepal and its people.

I express profound gratitude for this opportunity and am proud to be part of WHR’s initiatives. Recommending this transformative experience to others, it goes beyond discovering a new country—it’s about immersing oneself in a rich culture, traditions, and personal growth. Thanks to WHR for selecting me; I am determined to contribute even more in the months ahead.
