International Conference<\/strong><\/p>\n on<\/strong><\/p>\n Enriching the Journey towards Empowerment of Widows<\/strong><\/p>\n 4-6 February, 2013<\/strong><\/p>\n The three day International Conference on \u2018\u00a0Enriching the Journey towards Empowerment of Widows\u2019\u00a0<\/strong>will be held in Nepal on February 4-6, 2013.\u00a0 The conference will be organized by Women for Human Rights, Single Women Group (WHR) with financial and technical assistance from UNDEF and strategic partner organizations.<\/p>\n WHR Background:<\/strong><\/p>\n WHR is a non-governmental organization, which was established in 1994 with the vision of empowering widows throughout Nepal.\u00a0 WHR helps widows to fight injustice.\u00a0 We work towards the creation of a society where women can live in conditions of equality and justice, empowering themselves in all aspects of their lives from skill development to economic independence.\u00a0 WHR mainly works with widows in rural areas with VEED (Vulnerable, Exploited, Excluded and Disadvantaged) groups.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0For more than a decade we have been working to improve the status of widows.\u00a0\u00a0WHR has organized over 84,000 single women in 1,050 village municipality and development committees in 73 districts of Nepal and has succeed in mobilizing them as key agents of change in their respective communities. \u00a0As a result of our work, WHR received\u00a0Special Consultative Status with Economic and Social Council in 2011<\/em>.\u00a0 WHR works as Secretariat of South Asian Network for Widows’ Empowerment in Development (SANWED) for the rights of widows in South Asia along with its International Partner Widows Peace through Democracy (WPD) UK.<\/p>\n \u00a0Situation Analysis of widows:<\/strong><\/p>\n Women comprise of more than male population in the world.\u00a0 Nevertheless, women are viewed as subordinates to their male counterparts. \u00a0The plight of widows globally is significantly governed by the cultural and religious beliefs. \u00a0Moreover, widows in South Asia are faced with discrimination. They are excluded by a society, which considers them as inauspicious and symbols of bad omen and ill fate.<\/p>\n Widows and their dependants are unable to obtain their basic needs, such as proper shelter, nutritious food and sanitation.\u00a0There is a high level of psychological trauma and mental distress. Displaced widows around the world are sexually harassed and exploited. \u00a0Indeed,\u00a0children of widows and young widows are highly vulnerable to trafficking and sexual exploitation.<\/p>\n Widow-related gender based violence has not been adequately researched.\u00a0 There is no reliable data or qualitative information on the causes, nature, and consequences of these practices.\u00a0 Widows of all ages, child widows, young mothers and elderly women in developing countries, especially in Africa, South Asia and the Middle East, experience different forms of violence. Across regions, religions, cultures, caste and class, widows are stigmatized for bringing bad luck or being inauspicious. Harmful traditional practices, such as degrading and life-threatening mourning and burial rites that oppress widows within their families are rarely mentioned. Due to illiteracy, location, economic, social and cultural obstacles, widows often have little or no access to the justice systems.
